I just received a JC Higgins .270 rife from my Grandma and I was wondering if it was a good rifle for hunting.

The caliber is good up to deer sized animals. Always has been one of my favorite calibers. Good selection of ammunition, decent bullet weight variations, ammo can be found at any decent sporting goods store.

The JC Higgins rifle was sold by Sears a number of years ago. The rifles were made by Winchester (I think). Quality was pretty decent for a department store gun.I just received a JC Higgins .270 rife from my Grandma and I was wondering if it was a good rifle for hunting.
yes, it's a good rifle. JC Higgins are good, solid rifles, and .270 is a good cartridge for game to deer size, even elk with well placed shot.I just received a JC Higgins .270 rife from my Grandma and I was wondering if it was a good rifle for hunting.
Great caliber from Groundhogs to Whitetail Deer.*
The .270 isnt bad. Depends on what you want to hunt. It packs a decent punch for most bucks, but dont expect to bring a Grizzly down with one shot...
The brand ';JC HIGGINS'; was sold by sears. Each year, sears opened up their bidding for the rifles to all manufacturers. The one with the best price, was carried by sears that year. Sometimes Winchester won, sometimes others did. You can take the rifle in to any gun shop and they can tell you who made the rifle for sears. That way you know what parts to order if needed anyway. As for the .270, I'm a fanatic about the cartridge. Yes, I tried most other calibers over the years before I settled on .270. I have taken many many Mule deer, black bears, elk and hogs with mine. I use the old Jack O'Connor load with a 150 grain sierra boat tail soft point for all of them. It has been a 1 shot kill rife for me,for many years. I drop down to a 130 grain bullet for antelope. The .270 with the 150 grain bullet shoots farther, faster and flatter that a 30-06 with a 160 grain bullet.

Shoot safe
Great gun for medium sized elk on down. Good gun to get! Stay safe and have a great time!
its good for smaller game
The .270 was hunter/writer Jack O'Connor's favorite caliber and he swore by it. It is one of the greatest hunting shells of all time for the previously mentioned game. Proof can be seen every time you go to a big box store's gun section. There is always a .270 in there somewhere (along with a 30-06, another great caliber).
It an excellent rifle for small to medium game. Very good for deer, good power and take-down. Get you a decent scope mounted on it and you have a winner!
