My dog is suddenly hunting and panting in my sons very messy room.. why?

The only other times my dog has panted is during a storm (she hates them) And has only hunted the pet hamster until we found it.. no harm. Just curious. It has gone on a few hours or so. (no hamster out!)My dog is suddenly hunting and panting in my sons very messy room.. why?
Perhaps she hasn't been getting enough mental stimulation lately, and is taking out her built up energy in natural instincts of hunting. And hunting the hamster might have her feeling anxious because she probably knows she isn't supposed to do it.

Try taking her out for longer walks, jogs, vigorous games, dog parks, pack walks with neighbors' dogs, etc. Get her playing and exercising to tire her out more. She will stay out of trouble if she has had enough to do during the day.

Edit: Oh, do you not currently have a hamster? In which case it probably is another animal that drives the dog's prey instinct, such as mice or rats. Clean the room up first of all. And set snap traps only, if not humane traps. My dog is suddenly hunting and panting in my sons very messy room.. why?
Clean up the room! It's perfect for mice and rats then set out traps not poison and do not let the dog in until you believe all vermin have been caught. Then remove traps and see if your dog still hunts, if he does repeat.
Is there a chance there's any food in your son's room? (Boys are notorious for this.) If so, I'd guess there's a good chance you may have a mouse and the dog smells it.
There's probably some wild life in his room. The dog isn't hunting for nothing.

Tell your son to clean up his room.
Maybe a mouse.
ewww...there probably is a mouse or something. ugh! you poor thing!
