22 lr has 29% stopping power, 22 mag has 42% stopping power. This is determined by the power in one shot, so the mag has more power. However, 22lr is much more common and cheap than the magnum so I would suggest it for small game. The hottest .22 LR round I know of, the .22LR Aquilla hyper-velocity round, delivers around 204 ft-lbs of muzzle energy shooting 30 grain bullets at 1750 fps. The runner up, the CCI Stinger delivers 191 ft-lbs of muzzle energy shooting 32 grain bullets at 1640 fps.





CCI's .22 WMR Maxi-Mag TNT uses a 30 grain bullet at 2200 fps and delivers 322 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That's pretty typical with the 40 grain versions only getting another 2 ft-lbs of muzzle energy and a decrease in muzzle energy for the 50 grain loads.
