Can i use a .22 rifle for deer hunting in California?

Hi. I am wondering if i can use my dad's .22 for hunting in California? Can i use a .22 rifle for deer hunting in California?
Nick and Reb are right you can technically but it is illegal and not ethical. Can i use a .22 rifle for deer hunting in California?
22 is way too small to hunt deer with ethically. Some states allow 223,but that is also too small and doesn't provide enough energy to humanely harvest deer. Before you go hunting you need to take a Hunter Education course and learn a lot more. My now 12 year old son took the Washington state course last year and scored a 95%. He has a 243 and uses 95 grain bullets for deer, and that is about the minimum caliber many states require. He can also shoot my 30-06 with a reduced recoil load, went through a box of 20 in 1/2 an hour.

Sounds like maybe your dad doesn't hunt (or you would know about deer calibers),so you might want to get him involved. Most states (CA included) require a Hunter Ed course for anyone born after about 1975,so your dad might need to take a class too.

Using a 22 LR is illegal for deer, but there are plenty of calibers and cartridges that work great.
If you are talking .22 Long Rifle then, no, I don't know of any rim fire ammo legal on deer.

A well placed shot from a .223 will take a deer, even the larger ones. A poorly placed shot from a .458 Win Mag will not take a coastal deer. Shot placement is everything. I would suggest you look into a .243, 264, or 284 though. They tend to stay on line for a greater range.
Hmmm... 22 ';CENTERFIRE'; is a minimum cartridge is more that a few states....

.222

.223.5.56x45

.22 Hornet

22-250

and a bunch of other 22 caliber (centerfire) rounds that deer hunters across America swear by.

Can all take a whitetail... the question is --- is your shooting skill up to making a killing humane shot?

I have killed several freezer meat deer using a .223/5.56x45 rifle... and culled several farm nusience deer with the same rifle. Head shot... 50 yards. If I couldnt make that shot- I would have passed, it's probably not very humane to expect that light bullet to reliably make a heart and lung shot.

22-25 with Noslers works like a champ...

Rimfire does too... but poachers and ';meat hunters'; in poor rural areas dont limit shooting to ';ethical'; standards of good behavior. They show up to kill --- and most are pretty good at it...

My prefered rifle is a 25-35 WCF ... the 30-30 is a close second.
illegal as all hell. That and if you aren't a relatively experienced shooter, you are only going to wound the deer and have it run off. I've shot my share of deer with a .22... under 100 yards and on my own property... I've also been shooting for 20 years, (I'm 27 years old... do the math...). If you are going to hunt, you might as well use a 12/16/20 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs. Stick to video games actually...
A .22 can kill a 1,000 lb bull, but that doesn't mean that it should be used to do so.

It is WAY too small of a caliber to deer hunt with. And it's illegal as all get out too.

Check your state's DNR website to see what calibers/gauges are legal for deer hunting.
Nope..illegal..But more than that it's just plain stupid. A .22 is good for squirrel..you could use it on coyotes (bit under powered here), varmints and other small game though. I wouldn't suggest it on rabbits..they're just too fast to draw a good bead on when you're in brushy country or heavily wooded edges of field.
No, you would have a better chance of killing the deer by hitting it with rifle and beating it than shooting it with such a small caliber.
U can but it's too small unless u want to track him for hours. I hunt a lot and reccomend a 243. Or higher. 223. Will do the job but won't drop ur buck. Try a 7mm. If u see urself doin some hinting they're slot of fun ;D
I wouldn't recommend you do so. It may be legal. I know where I live in most of the game zones they don't care. IF you do, which I hope you don't Get a shot right between the eyes.
Not a very humane calibre for deer. .243 would be the minimum choice for me. I use a .308 2-3 steps and it's all over.
No, it must be a centerfire cartridge. You could use a .22-250 but the minimum caliber in my opinion would the .243
Not that I would know anything about this but understand that quite a few poachers use a 22 rifle as it doesn't make too much noise.
if its a .220 swift, maybe. if its a .22 long rifle, absolutely not.
agree with annie,, i have shot many whitetail with 22 but it was a need for food ok check if state regs say centerfire or 243 or larger
* Ha, Ha, Ha, your kidding right?*
The simple answer is NO. You can not use a rim fire rifle to hunt deer anywhere in the U.S.
No, you cannot. And you should not!
No that gun would not kill a deer. you need a .243 rifle or somethin along the lines of that
NO IT'S ILLEGAL
If you can use an airgun for turkey, who knows.
if you use a 40 grain solid point in the head at 60 yards or under that will do.
No. It is too small.
A .22 rimfire? You've got to be kidding.
