Which type of gun is best for killing(hunting) bear a 30-06 or 300 magnum?

Both of these calibers will have no problem taking any black bear that you might encounter, with proper shot placement and the proper bullet. The .300 Winchester Magnum (I assume this is the one you are talking about) is the minimum recommended caliber for Grizzlies, though certainly not the best to stop a charge, the .338 Win Mag would be a better choice for grizzly/brown bear hunting. The 30-06 will be cheaper and more pleasant to shoot than a .300 Mag unless recoil is not an issue for you. Good luck and be safe!Which type of gun is best for killing(hunting) bear a 30-06 or 300 magnum?
Whichever you own really, whichever you shoot better. They both shoot the same bullets. A typical '06 round will punch right through a black bear and dump the rest of its energy in the hillside behind it. A 300 mag will do the same but dump more energy into the hillside.

If I was going after grizzly or really big bears up north, the 06 is the minimum, I'd choose the magnum for them. But for blacks, anything that will drop a deer, .243 or better, will be more than enough.Which type of gun is best for killing(hunting) bear a 30-06 or 300 magnum?
the .30-06 in enough for black bear, use at least a 180gr bullet.

the .300 mag is not necessary, but extra power is never a bad thing, and the 200gr load would be devastating

But for brown/grizzly, .338 mag is superior, 250-275gr bullet, and the 416 is better yet. Now there is some anecdotal evidence claiming to be statistical reality which shows more quicker kills with the lighter 200-225gr in .338, and it certainly is possible, but until I figure out just why, I will continue to use and recommend heavy bullets.
Depends greatly on what kind of bear. For black bears the .300 mag can be used but is a bit much and the 30-06 fine, however they can be taken with the good ol鈥?30-30 with a well placed shot.

Now if you are talking brown bears or Grizzlies then I would pick the .300 win mag or larger rifle.

Bullet placement is the most important factor and for the big bears you need a deep penetrating bullet. For black bears any round suitable for deer will work. I have taken a few with the 30-06 with 165gr and 150gr jacketed soft tip bullets.

Both will work on black bears. The only draw back with the 300 mag is a bad shot will destroy more meat and cause greater pelt damage.
* The 30-06 will harvest any Big Game in North America as well as even a Bull Cape Buffalo in Africa using a 220 grain solid Barnes bullet for a one shot kill.* Magnums are not needed or necessary when you have a 30-06.*
30-06 is more than enough for black bear, and any 30 caliber is asking for trouble with brownies. A rifle with a big hole in the end for big critters that can put big holes in you is a sensible precaution.
30-06 for black bears and .338/458mag for big brown/grisly.....short and sweet.
The one you can shoot the best.
180 grain 30-06. good luck.
when only 1 side is armed, it's called a slaughter not a sport
both r plenty big in the right hands
