Can you sharpen a hunting knife with sand paper?

someone told me i can sharpen my knife with sand paper is this true? and how do i do it is there a special way?Can you sharpen a hunting knife with sand paper?
Perfect done right ,lay fine sandpaper on a smooth flat surface, rub knife one way only away from edge in a forward motin ( cutting edge only),done right is as good as a stone, finish with water paper and a little water. Can carry this in a pocket with you and it is small and light. If you dont have flat surface ,like out in country fold paper around flat rock,or flat stick and use it as U would a stone. EDIT-- Big dog knows his stuff and in addition to what he said about a dull knife is the fact that a dull blade will slip on some surfaces as on fresh fish and will give one an ugly slice. Can you sharpen a hunting knife with sand paper?
I have a friend that watches the gate at green swamp he found an old discarded knife it turned out to be an old grandad after he cleaned it extensively he worked the blade to perfection with an Emory board the kind a woman uses and some men on there finger nails. like a razor. Dave
yes, you simply rub the sandpaper up and down the knife, until it is sharp enough for your liking
Some people just answer to answer!

Yes it can be done, but not with your ';normal wood sandpaper.';

You need emery cloth beginning with 400 grit through 6000 grit. My friend it will sharpen your blade.

Wet the paper with water. Fold. Put on a hard surface, and stroke like you would on a whet stone. Going to finer grits.

You won't believe this, but finish off on a piece of cardboard. That will put a razor edge on your blade.

Before I bought a ceramic stone, this is what I used to use. Now I went wild and bought a Tormek system. I do a lot of wood carving and got tired of keeping my tools razor sharp by hand polishing.

Be careful a sharp blade cuts, a dull blade hurts!
get a sharpening stone
First answer is correct!
Probably not very well. You need a whet stone and or a sharpening steel.
You can't. The edge will become dull instead of maintaining your sharp edge.... Use a knife sharpener instead.
Only a butter knife, by that I mean a knife made of butter.
You can, make shure you don't use to rough of sand paper, rub the knife on the cutting edge
Yes, Place the sandpaper on a flat surface, and then stroke as you would with a stone. I have an old motor with a special circle attachment that I use double stick tape to apply a piece of sand paper, and this expedites the job. It also makes my wife and then me happy.
the sand paper is too gritty. check the web site sof most knives as thery will sharpen them for free, i just used gerber and kershaw and it was free.
No you cant but if you have a can opener you can use that. Most of them have a spot for sharping knives on the back. Good luck!!!
You could with a very very fine grit sandpaper. The blackish kind. You would be better off going to lowes or a sports store and buying a knife sharpener, it's a few bucks and it has the stone encased in a plastic guide, I've found it does the job.
No. Just use a soap stone.
