you need to register online for a hunter education safety course. watch all of the online videos, read all of the materials, and complete the workbook. (all of this is available online) then show up to the WMA you registered to take your field session/ safety course at. this takes approximately 4-6 hours depending on how many licenses you are going for. the written test is very easy, if you know how to read you can pass it. everything can be found here

As long as you are with your grandfather (who presumably holds a license), you might not need one. Get your parents to look up New Jersey laws for you, it'll clear up a lot of things. Either that, or a trip to town hall will explain everything. Happy (and safe) hunting!
Look up your state's hunting laws.

Look under license requirements

You probably need a hunter safety course unless you are hunting on your own private land. Check your states laws!
